The 1980s gave birth to a film that would etch its name in the annals of cult cinema history:Repo Man. Directed by Alex Cox, the movie blended sci-fi elements with punk rock ethos, creating a unique and unforgettable experience. Fast forward to the present, and Cox is set to revisit this iconic universe with the announcement of a sequel,Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer.
In a recent interview withInverse, Cox shared insights into the upcoming project, revealing that the sequel is both a reimagining and a continuation of the original story. The film will follow the protagonist, Otto, portrayed by Kiowa Gordon ofThe Twilight Sagafame, stepping into the shoes originally filled byEmilio Estevez. Otto’s world has evolved with the times, transitioning from physically hunting down cars in rough neighborhoods to utilizing the internet and hacking into onboard computers to locate and repossess vehicles. Cox revealed:

“The advent of incredible technology means, for the repo man, that everything has changed — and nothing has changed. Otto used to spend all night cruising around bad neighborhoods looking for cars. Now he spends all night on the internet doing the same thing. Instead of hotwiring the vehicle, Otto takes control of the onboard computers and directs it to the repo yard, or the sheriff’s substation. Yet this is not enough for Otto, who has only aged by 90 minutes in the last 40 years. He yearns for past simplicities: beer, booty, and no nuclear war Back in the 1990s, I tried my hand at a different sequel to Repo Man: Otto’s Hawaiian Holiday. That was of its time. The Wages of Beer is the repo world of 2024.”
He elaborated on how Otto, despite being only 90 minutes older in the last 40 years, longs for the simplicity of his earlier days, yearning for beer, booty, and a world without the threat of nuclear war.
