Fans ofRian Johnsonhave been patiently waiting to see if his planned return to theStar Warsuniverse will ever happen, and, likewise, lovers of hisKnives Outmovies have been wondering what the next adventure forDaniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc will be beyondWake Up, Dead Man.However, the director’s new update on his future plans has suggested that neither of these popular IPs will be getting his attention in the near future as his next film will be something completely different.

Speaking withCollider, Johnson explained that he has an original idea that is not a mystery – something he has become known for between theKnives Outfranchise andhis TV series Poker Face– but something else that will likely be his next project. Speaking specifically on the possibility of a fourthKnives Outmovie, he said:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt with a bruised and bloody face in Brick

“As long as Daniel [Craig] still wants to keep doing it and as long as we have an idea that, to us, feels not just like cranking another one out, but feels genuinely exciting and scary like, ‘Oh, wow, could we pull that off?’ I love the genre. It’s endlessly malleable, and so it holds endless possibilities. But at the same time, I have made three of them in a row. I don’t feel burnt out on it at all, but the next thing I have in my head to write is an original that’s not a mystery at all. It’s a totally different genre. One of the things I love about the mystery genre is that it holds the whodunit. Like sci-fi, it encompasses so many other types of genres. ‘Wake Up Dead Man,’ this next movie, is so different than ‘Glass Onion.’ It’s like night and day. And so, as long as we keep doing that, it’s exciting.”

Why Brick Is Still Rian Johnson’s Best Movie

While Johnson’s best work may be ahead of him as he continues to add new films and TV projects to his resume, he has never topped Brick.

What Happened to Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars’ Movies?

Rian Johnson first entered the world ofStar Warsas the director ofThe Last Jedi, arguably one of the most divisive movies of the entire franchise, but that didn’t stop his name being attached to a potential new trilogy ofStar Warsmovies. During 2023’s Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shared one of the last updates that Johnson’s return toStar Warshas received. At the time, she said:

“Rian and I talk all the time. He is unbelievably busy. So we’re not actively involved in anything at the moment because he’s doing another one of the ‘Glass Onion’ movies and then God knows what else. But he really wants to step back into the space. It’s a big commitment of time, so that’s really on him.”

The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson Is Dying to Direct an Episode of The Mandalorian

It seems that perhaps Johnson has decided that he has too many other ideas to work on to commit to the lengthy process that delivering threeStar Warsmovies would entail. Additionally, with several otherStar Warsmovies now coming in the next few years, it seems that the chances of seeing another Johnson-directed movie are getting slimmer all the time. However, his nextKnives Outmovie,Wake Up, Dead Man, will be released sometime in the fall.
