The duo has prepared a season focused more on the villains' dark plans than on the quiet heroism of the protagonists.
The upcoming season explores deeper into the lore created by J.R.R. Tolkien, showing a period marked by Sauron’s cunning rise to dominance during the Second Age. Sauron, portrayed by Charlie Vickers, will adopt an Elven guise, furthering his malevolent reach across the land.
During their interview with Total Film (viaGamesRadar), McKay and Payne revealed the new season pivots significantly from its predecessor, shifting the narrative focus from the journeys of heroes to the machinations of its antagonists.
We like to say that Season 1 was primarily about our heroes. But Season 2 is all about the villains.
The Rings of Power
This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and takes viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.
The showrunners teased an epic confrontation that involves Sauron’s forces, including Adar and his orc legions, and prominent Elven leaders like Galadriel, Elrond, and Gil-galad, who muster their armies in response to the growing threat.
“This time, Sauron’s agenda sets everything in motion: Adar [Sam Hazeldine, taking over the role from Joseph Mawle] and his army of orcs; Galadriel [Morfydd Clark], Elrond [Robert Aramayo] and Gil-galad [Benjamin Walker] and their armies of elves –all of which will come crashing together in the most ambitious battle our show has seen yet, a battle from which many big players may not make it out alive.”
This upcoming battle is described as the biggest and most complex ever on the show, with action and consequences beyond anything before. The showrunners suggest that it’s very risky and some main characters might not survive.

The season 2 trailer introduces Sauron in an Elven disguise, a tactical maneuver that allows him not just the advantage of anonymity but also manipulation. His deceptive appearance will enable him to infiltrate the Elven ranks and influence key figures like Celebrimbor, the renowned Elven smith, nudging him towards the creation of more Rings of Power.
