Eggers Continues to Impress By Calling Back to Films of the Past

While we haven’t been given a clear look at Eggers' Count Orlock yet, most definitely at the director’s request, the shots we have seen from the trailers are stunning, to say the least. This is partly due to the honorable decision to shoot in 35mm film, which automatically evokes the cinematic feeling and look of films of the past. According toWorld of Reel, Eggers and Blaschke created an entirely new filter which was engineered just for the film and is said to have an aspect ratio of 1.33:1.

Eggers, apparently needing a combination of lenses and filters to get the effect he wanted, asked a glass manufacturing company to help make his unique filter. The intention was for the film to look black and white, while allowing a few colors, like the persisting blues and yellows seen in several scenes, to come through in the frame, causing the desaturated look.

Nosferatu is a remake of the 1922 silent film of the same name from director F. W. Murnau. Robert Eggers is crafting his own version of the story for the reboot as writer and director, with Bill Skarsgård stepping into the shoes of Count Orlok. Nosferatu tells the tale of a young woman who falls victim to a vampire utterly infatuated with her.
