The first footage forRyan Gosling’s upcoming sci-fi thriller,Project Hail Mary, was just unveiled at this year’s CinemaCon. According to the press reports, the first footage from the new movie looks epic. The new sci-fi thriller is set to be released on August 12, 2025. Sci-fi fans may be familiar with the film’s title, as it is based on the eponymous novel byThe Martianauthor, Andy Weir. Ridley Scott’s adaptation ofThe Martian, starring Matt Damon, was a critical and commercial hit, and fans cannot wait for Weir’s next science-centric, space-faring novel to be brought to the big screen.
That wait is getting smaller and smaller, as the first footage forProject Hail Marywas unveiled at CinemaCon (via The Hollywood Reporter). The movie is directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who both took to the stage as part of Amazon MGM’s presentation, along with the film’s leading astronaut, Ryan Gosling. “It’s an insanely ambitious story that’s massive in scope and seemed really hard to make and that’s kind of our bag,” Gosling said of the film. In the movie,Gosling plays reluctant astronaut Ryland Grace,who wakes up with amnesia on a spaceship headed towards the edge of the galaxy. The actor described the character, saying:
“He goes on such a journey as you can see and this is why you go to the movies. I’m not just saying it because I’m in it, because I’m a producer on it as well.”
The presentation cold-opened with the new footage fromProject Hail Mary, beginning with Ryland working in a classroom. He is approached by Sandra Hüller’s character, who warns him that the Earth and the rest of the galaxy is in danger, and attemppts to recruit him. Turning down the top-secret mission, Ryland is forced into the back of an SUV and shipped out to a space station. The footage then cuts to an explanation of the mission, as a lone astronaut must venture into space to clear up the galaxy-ending threat, and they may not survive the journey. Against his will, Ryland becomes that lone astronaut.

During the presentation, Christopher Miller describedProject Hail Maryas “the biggest challenge” in his and Phil Lord’s filmmaking careers, and namedGosling as “the best actor of his generation.“Gosling threw the praise right back, stating that Lord and Miller “have a singular vision which is weird because there’s two of them. They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh cry.”
Project Hail Maryis set to be released on June 24, 2025.Aside from Gosling and Hüller, the rest of the movie’s cast has yet to be revealed. The official synopsis for Gosling’sProject Hail Maryreads:
“Project Hail Mary is an exhilarating space adventure set in the near future. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), a school-teacher-turned-astronaut, wakes up from a coma, alone, on a space station with no memory of who he is or his mission.
