1984’s ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ Was Shrouded in Controversy

Although modern audiences have gotten their fair share of Christmas horror and killer Santa movies, things were not the same back in the 1980s. Art the Clown was decades away from wearing the iconic costume, massacring people and making snow angels in a pool of blood. Back then, anything associated with Christmas that did not follow the original spirit of the holiday season was massively controversial. That was until 1984’sSilent Night, Deadly Nightdisrupted the concept and presented a fresh take on the iconic Santa Claus. Suddenly, he was coming down the chimney to butcher a helpless family.

The film was met with public uproar. Parents were not happywith the way Santa was being portrayed, because children now feared the Christmas icon - although it could argued that they should not have known about the movie at all. The outcry was so massive that all marketing had to be pulled from all mediums, and the film was pulled shortly thereafter. It wasn’t until months later that another distributor decided to re-release the film, without the support of the original distributor, Tri-Star Pictures. Home video sales were also heavily affected by this backlash, andSilent Night, Deadly Nightquickly earned a strong cult following.
