Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow is one of the founding members of The Avengers, having made herMCUdebut way back inIron Man 2. Johansson said goodbye to the role in 2021 after finally being given a standalone movie, aptly titledBlack Widow. Since then, fans have been desperate to know if Johansson will return in the future, especially as the Multiverse means that death in the MCU is as pointless asthinking theEternalswill return. But Johansson’s latest update isn’t the news fans wanted to hear.

During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Scarlett Johansson was asked about joining her former Marvel alumni in the upcomingAvengers: Doomsday. As much as the actress wants to reunite with her long-time colleagues on screen, she said that it doesn’t make sense for her character. “It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play,” Johansson said.

The upcoming MCU series stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams and is executive produced by Ryan Coogler.

Black Widow met her end in 2019’sAvengers: Endgame, sacrificing herself so that Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) could retrieve the Soul Stone to stop Thanos. The 2021Black Widowmovie was a prequel, which also introduced Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova to the MCU. “I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete,” Johansson said of Natasha’s sacrifice inEndgame. “I don’t want to mess with that. For fans, too — it’s important for them.” It seems as though Johansson is one of the only Marvel vets to hold that opinion. Even Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are returning as Professor X and Magneto, respectively, inAvengers: Doomsday. Not to mentionRobert Downey Jr.’s shocking MCU return, this time playing the film’s titular villain, Victor Von Doom.

Scarlett Johansson Believes ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Should Have Won an Oscar

One of the biggest complaints levied against the Oscars is that many of the films nominated for the major categories are very niche. Even though that argument is often made by people who only want to watch CGI-filled blockbusters, The Academy does occasionally throw in a movie that nobody has seen(not even the voting jury). But Scarlett Johansson is shocked thatEndgame, the movie that almost everybody has seen, was snubbed at that year’s Oscars.

“How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?” she said. The movie was nominated for Best Visual Effects. But, despite being the highest-grossing film of all time, untilAvatar’s millionth re-release dethroned it, The Academy didn’t give it a second thought. Johansson said the film’s merits go beyond its box office result. “It was an impossible movie that should not have worked, that really works as a film — and also, it’s one of the most successful films of all time.”
