Universal’s Monstermovies have been making a surprising comeback in recent years, especially considering how much of a disaster their remake ofThe Mummyturned out to be. Following the release of the Tom Cruise movie, Universal abandoned its planned Dark Universe and instead turned its attention to some modern interpretations of their classic monster line, such asThe Invisible Manandthe new release ofRenfield. Now it seems that one of the next monster movies will be directed byScream 6collaborative teamRadio Silence.

Having already been offered aUniversal Monstersproject before the release ofScream 6, the team made up of directors Tyler Gillet and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin as well as producer Chad Villella were caught out by the high demand for a quick sequel to 2022’sScreamto take the project on at the time. However, withScream 6now done and a seventhScreammovie seemingly not as immediately in demand, it looks like the Universal deal is now on according toThe Hollywood Reporter.

Still from Renfield

The report claims that the project was previously going by the title ofDracula’s Daughter, but there are currently no plot details known. The script for the film appears to already be complete, with Stephen Shields writing the original draft and Guy Busick, who has previously collaborated with Radio Silence, has revised it. The report goes on to note that there could have been an evolution of that script since the original script was written, and the film could end up involving otherUniversal Monsters, although given Radio Silence’s previous movies it would be likely that film will take a comedy horror approach.

Universal Monsters Are Big Business Again…as Stand-Alone Projects

Back in 2017, the arrival ofThe Mummywas meant to bring Universal’s Monsters franchise to the cinematic universe arena. When that failed to gain any kind of foothold, it seemed thatUniversal had the choice to keep going down a shared universe roadto potentially more failure or to completely rethink their plans. Thankfully for them, they chose the latter and that has opened up so many avenues to be explored that the franchise can be bigger as individual, unique projects rather that attempting to link any of them together in one universe.

So far, there has been the straight-up horror ofThe Invisible Manand the comedy horror ofRenfield, and there are already rumors ofBride of FrankensteinandWolf-Manprojects being worked on, and others such asThe Creature From the Black Lagoonand more being considered.

The news that Radio Silence will be dipping into the Universal Monsters pool suggests that there are some interesting prospects ahead for fans of the old classic monsters who have finally found a place in modern cinema. WithRenfieldgaining high praise ahead of its release, for its over the top gore and unique take on the classic Dracula henchman, we can certainly expect some less serious Monster projects coming in the next few years.
