The Venice Film Festival is in full swing, with the festival normally serving as an early barometer for Oscar season. One of the movies that debuted at thefilm festivaltoday isMan Down, which doesn’t have a release date in place at this time. The film reunites actorShia LaBeoufwith directorDito Montiel, who both collaborated on the 2006 dramaA Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. The actor made headlines last year after a string of bizarre incidents, such as yelling from the audience during a Broadway show, and showing up to a movie premiere by wearing a paper bag over his head. During an interview with Associated Press,Shia LaBeoufrevealed thatMan Downwas a therapeutic experience for him.
“He came to my house when I was in a really low place and offered it to me like therapy, like ‘here’s a healing process so we can jump into together and get well. I want to work with people that I have a connection with. I think for a while I was chasing the 10 list, right? The 10 directors you want to work with - and that didn’t fare well for me. I do much better with loving, familial environments where you feel like you may fail and the dude will get you on the other side. So I’m trying to make friends now and work with those people.”
Man Downcenters on a traumatized U.S. Marine (Shia LaBeouf) searching for his estranged wife and son afterdisasterstrikes. The supporting cast includesShia LaBeouf,Gary Oldman,Clifton Collins Jr.andJai Courtney. The actor revealed thatGary Oldmanis his hero, and he follows him around “like a weirdo.” Here’s what the actor had to say about his idol.
“He’s my hero, I love him. I do anything he tells me. I follow him around like a weirdo. I hear he’s going to sound mix or something and I’ll just show up and dude’s looking at me like ‘what are you doing here?’ Because I’ve already seen the sound mix but I’m back there and go ‘Hey, what’s up Gary? Looking at sound mix huh?'”
Man Downdoesn’t have arelease dateset at this time, but we’ll have to wait and see if it gets picked up for distribution at the Venice Film Festival. It is also set to screen at the Toronto Film Festival next weekend, but we’ll keep you posted if it gets picked up. What do you think aboutShia LaBeouf’s therapeutic experience onMan Down?
