The Spider-Senses of the residents of Glasgow, Scotland, must have been tingling at full intensity over the weekend as filming onSpider-Man: Brand New Daybegan, and in some brand-new, never-before-seen footage (below),Tom Holland’s beloved wallcrawler, Peter Parker, can be seen battling something or someone on top of what appears to be a tank in his beautiful new blue and red Spider-Man costume. Holland can be seen with and without his trademark mask as the actor performs some harrowing wirework in broad daylight. Holland, who has portrayed theMarvel Cinematic Universeand Sony’s version of the character since appearing for the first time nearly 10 years ago on-screen inCaptain America: Civil War(2016), is ecstatic to play the young hero again. Holland said in an interview onFlip Your Wig(via @thisismax):
“I’m obviously over the moon and so excited. Playing Spider-Man is like hanging out with an old pal. And I think we were really restricted with what we could do in the last movie because of COVID; we shot the entire film on stages. Now, we’re really gonna lean into that old-school filmmaking and shoot in real locations, which is why we’re starting in Glasgow, and we’re gonna to use the streets of Glasgow to build this massive set-piece that we’re putting together. So, it’s gonna feel like making Spider-Man 1 [Homecoming] again. It’s been such a long time since I’ve done it, it’s gonna feel like a breath of fresh air, and I think the fans are going to be over the moon with what we’re putting together.”

Tom Holland Makes a ‘Doomsday’ Style Entrance in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Suit Reveal Video
Fans have been given their first look at Tom Holland’s new Spider-Man suit, and a familiar location was used for the reveal.
Destin Daniel Cretton, who helmed the vastly underappreciated 2021 MCU entryShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is the director ofSpider-Man: Brand New Day, and he has his work cut out for him when it comes to living up to the commercial and critical success of the billion-dollar smash hitSpider-Man: No Way Home(2021). At the conclusion of that affluent film, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was forced to cast a spell that made everyone forget Peter Parker/Spider-Man, which sadly cut the webslinger out of the minds of his girlfriend M.J. (Zendaya) and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon). However, Sony and Marvel Studios are making sure everyone’s friendly neighborhood superhero has plenty of new characters to fill the memory lane void inBrand New Day, but does the film really need other Marvel characters to help Holland’s Spider-Man carry his own movie — yet again?!

Does ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Star Really Need Help Carrying His Own Film?
Much like Tom Holland’s other solo films,Spider-Man: Brand New Daywill feature additional Marvel superheroes to help and/or hinder the webslinger, but surely Sony and Marvel Studios know by now that Holland can carry his own movie, right? Apparently not becauseBrand New Daynot only enlisted the services of Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher, but it was also revealed two days ago (Aug. 1) thatMark Ruffalo would reprise his beloved role as The Hulk.As exciting as it must be for the fans to add Dr. Bruce Banner (Ruffalo) and Frank Castle (Bernthal) into the mix, the question still lingers: Why won’t the MCU just let Holland have the spotlight all to himself in his solo Spidey adventures?
In Holland’s first solo adventure back in 2017, the powers that be added Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man to the cast ofSpider-Man: Homecoming, so the veteran Avenger could continue his mentorship of young Peter Parker. True, Stark’s addition actually played an integral role in the movie. However, two years later, the powers that be deemed it necessary to add Samuel L. Jackson to the equation inSpider-Man: Far From Home, but the A-lister’s character Nick Fury was absolutely unnecessary in that film. In fact, any number of other MCU characters could have filled that superfluous part, and more effectively.Far From Homeis unquestionably the closest Holland has come to carrying the entire weight of an installment in the fan-favorite movie series, and it became the first soloSpider-Manmovie ever to eclipse the billion-dollar mark at the global box office. Hint, hint, Marvel and Sony.

Spider-Man: No Way Homecame next in 2021, and this time around Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange appeared in a small but significant role, as he is the one who casts the spells which cause all the chaos in the last of Spidey’s big-screen adventures. Yes, the inclusion of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s OG Spider-Man characters helped that movie make nearly $2 billion at the worldwide box office, but doesn’t Marvel and Sony have enough faith in Holland to let him sling his own webs on-screen at some point? Obviously, this is a moot point where the next installment is concerned, but perhaps studio executives will give Holland a shot to carry his own movie in the future, which he rightfully deserves afterSpider-Man: Brand New Dayopens in theaters on July 14, 2025.
