The following article contains spoilers for Squid Game Season 3.
Squid Game, theNetflixsurvival thriller that became the streamer’s most watched series during its first season, has now come to an end. The final game was played, and apparently, the operation led by the Front Man and some truly obnoxious VIPs has been taken down. The series finale delivered a highly anticipated climax that managed to divide audiences worldwide. Part of the reason why the finale was divisive was because of the final winner: a newborn baby who Seong Gi-hun took care of until the very end. Now, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk reveals why he decided toend the series with such a controversial direction.
The last episode of the series saw Gi-hun fighting against one other greedy player who put his life before his own offspring. Myung-gi is the father of Jun-hee’s baby, and he’s the other single survivor fighting for victory. Gi-hun eventually defeats Myung-gi, but he and the baby can’t be the winners. The simple mistake of not officially starting the final game (by not pressing a button) represents a tragic consequence: Gi-hun or the baby must die.

‘Squid Game’ Creator Reveals the Spin-Off Idea He Wants to Develop With Netflix
The spin-off to the Netflix giant could take place outside the arena.
Hwang sat down with Netflix Tudum to break downthe finale of the beloved series. The winner could only have been Gi-hun or the baby, for obvious reasons. Myung-gi was not exactly popular in the end, with Hwang saying the following about the morally corrupted character: “Myung-gi represents all of us. We constantly talk about passing on to our future generations… But when it comes down to it, no one wants to pay more into the pension fund, we aren’t really living carbon-neutral lives, and we still produce just as much waste — all for our own convenience and self-interest.”

Ultimately, Gi-hun decides to sacrifice himself to let the baby survive and become the winner. The Front Man picks up and saves the newborn before the Coast Guard arrives on the island. The baby and the cash prize eventually end up in the hands of Jun-ho, the Front Man’s brother, who spent Season 3 looking for the island. Hwang revealed why he decided to make the baby the sole winner of the entire show:
“Ultimately, the baby represents the future generation. I believe we also have the responsibility and duty to try everything that we can in our power to leave a better world for the future generation. The baby coming out [as] the winner was in line with the meaning of Squid Game.

“I eventually came to believe that, no matter how hopeless and dark the world may seem, perhaps we still have a chance if we can find even a glimpse of hope within ourselves. Rather than seeking something from or in others, I hope we can reflect on our own values and whether we have faith in ourselves, so we can build on the good within us. That’s the takeaway I hope viewers will have after watching Season 3.”
‘Squid Game’ Has Come to a Conclusion, But Is It Really the End of the Netflix Sensation?
Squid Gamehas ended, and though fans are likely pleading for more, there are no plans to continue, at least, with the same story or characters. However, the last scene in the final may represent the light at the end of the tunnel: when the Front Man arrives in the U.S., he realizes that the game is more international than he thought. In an alleyway, a recruiter is playing “ddakji” with a man who seems to be desperate for money. When the recruiter (a mind-blowing cameo by Hollywood legend Cate Blanchett) glances at the Front Man, it is understood that the game is not restricted to one location.Could this represent the future of the franchise?
