Fan art is something that has just become commonplace in the modern age. For anything that is popular, there are surely plenty of Instagram and Tumblr accounts that are devoted to making art of many kinds in honor of those popular things. Long before it was easy to do so,Star Warsfans have been making fan art, but freelance digital artistSteven Learhas taken it to an awesome new place. Just because he can,Learhas made dozens of images depictingStar Warscharacters on famous album covers, and it is really, seriously cool.
The images were posted to his website, which is called Why The Long Play Face, and feature tons ofStar Wars characters, ranging from the most famous to the most obscure, photoshopped expertly onto album covers. Not only does he employ a wide range of characters with this series of fan creations, but he also uses albums from every corner and era of music, as well as many different art styles to suit the specific piece. Lucky for fans, he does do prints.
While there are a ton to choose from, there are some serious standouts. One of the more clever ones features theDeath Staron the cover of Pink Floyd’sDark Side of the Moon. It is pretty obvious, but really great. One of the better examples ofLearusing some more obscure characters was taking The Band’s self titled album, and placing the Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes, otherwise known as the Cantina Band, on the cover. There are of course plenty of the coreStar Warscharacters used on many of the covers, like Luke Skywalker on the cover of Black Sabbath’sParanoid, and Han Solo on the cover ofDavid Bowie’sHeroes.
Fan artis something of a conundrum that is handled and looked at very differently by those in control of the properties being utilized in the art. While some creators aren’t as happy about people taking their creations and doing as they please,Lucasfilmhas always embracedStar Wars fansand their creations. Even since Disney took over in 2012, the company is big on letting the fans show their love however they see fit. So, we are all in the clear and can enjoyLear’s really cool creations.
Star Warsis not the only property thatLearhas expertly taken and placed in the world of famous album cover art. Because he has a self proclaimed “unhealthy obsession with movies, music, and Photoshop,” he has also done pieces involvingPulp Fiction,The Dark Knight RisesandJeff Goldblum, in his famous pose fromJurassic Park. you’re able to check out all ofSteven Lear’sStar Warscreations below, or visit hisInstagramto check out some of his other work.
