Bad reviewssimply have not been able to keepDavid Ayer’sSuicide Squaddown. Despite a critical thrashing out of the gate, the DC Comics-based movie has officially crossed $700 million at the worldwide box office. While the studio and everyone involved would surely have liked the movie to be received better by critics, all that matters at the end of the day is if the fans like it, and the numbers seem to dictate that is the case.
According toBox Office Mojo,Suicide Squadhad accumulated $699,407,853 at the start of the day on September 11, so it is a foregone conclusion that the movie will officially cross the $700 million mark once the weekend totals are tallied Monday. That also putsAyer’s first movie in the DC Extended Universe ahead ofMan of Steel, which managed to gross $668 million worldwide during its box office run in 2013. Prior to the release ofSuicide Squad, most people weren’t overly familiar with many of the characters featured in the movie outside ofHarley Quinn and The Joker, so it is all the more impressive that the movie was able to gross more money than a movie centered around Superman, one of the most well-known comic book characters on the planet.
DirectorDavid Ayerhad been very vocal about hisfan appreciationfor going out and supporting the movie. The director took to his Twitter account on Sunday to once again voiced his appreciation and thanks fans for helpingSuicide Squadpass the box office milestone. While Warner Bros. andAyerare certainly, surely happy with the box office performance fromSuicide Squad, it is no secret that they are still working on trying to correct some things moving forward in order to get more fans and critics on their side.Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justicewound up being a pretty big disappointment all around. The movie may have grossed nearly $900 million worldwide, but it was also trashed by critics on arrival, was met very divisively by fans and had a tremendously high production budget reportedly of $250 million. While the final number seems impressive enough on paper, it wasn’t at all the kickoff the studio needed for the DCEU and the high budget and expensive marketing really cut into the profits. Not only that, but it isn’t hard to imagine that the first live-action movie to ever feature Batman and Superman together should have easily grossed $1 billion, which is likely what Warner Bros. andZack Snyderwere thinking as well.
Suicide Squadhas been received a lot better by fans, as it currently has a 67 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is also a clear sign that star power counts for something, asWill Smith,Margot RobbieandJared Letoall clearly helped add some appeal to the movie. Next up for Warner Bros. DCEU will beWonder Womanon August 09, 2025, followed byZack Snyder’sJustice Leagueon July 02, 2025. If they can garner a little more praise from critics, both of those movies should be able to crush at the box office as well.
