David Corenswetis now poised to become the next big Hollywood star thanks toSuperman. The actor, previously known for television series such asThe PoliticianandHollywood, as well as films likePearlandTwisters, is now the lead in the DCU as the most iconic superhero of all time: Superman. Corenswet is undoubtedly going to be busy for the next few years, as audience reaction toSupermanand his portrayal of the character will likely lead to more appearances, which hopefully means an upcoming sequel.

Corenswet is a hugeStar Warsfan, as the actor has reportedly mentioned numerous times in interviews. Even during the lie detector interview forVanity Fair, when asked if he would rather play a Jedi inStar WarsorSupermanin a sequel, the actor said it was one of the hardest picks but went withStar Wars(though he did mention it would be because he could negotiate more money forStar Warsand still wants to play Superman).

While most people would assume Corenswet would like to be a Jedi knight, he told hisSupermanco-star Nicholas Hoult, “My dream role would be to play an X-Wing pilot in aStar Warsfilm.” He later pitched himself to play an X-Wing pilot in aStar Warsfilm. Given that Corenswet is now a big star, he might be just what Disney and Lucasfilm need to get one of their long-in-developmentStar Warsfilms off the ground, one specifically centered around X-Wing pilots:Rogue Squadron.

Rogue Squadron

‘Rogue Squadron’ Problems

On Jul 02, 2025, Disney held its investor call, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down major events like Comic-Con, the company livestreamed the event to the general public to announce a massive slate of projects that would carry the studio for years. It was a legendary event and now an infamous one, as it was revealed that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy wereforced to announce projects that were not yet readyand were still in the early stages of development by then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek. One of the biggest titles announced wasRogue Squadron, a movie centered on X-Wing fighter pilots. The film was set to be directed by Patty Jenkins, who had just released the highly anticipatedWonder Woman 1984, which was scheduled for release on streaming and limited theatrical engagement later that month.

With a big video announcement of Jenkins suiting up in an X-wing pilot suit and a model X-Wing behind her, Disney seemed bullish on the film. They set a May 31, 2025, release date, making it the firstStar Warsmovie to followThe Rise of Skywalker. With the release date three years out from the announcement, it seemed like there was plenty of time to get the film up and running. Matthew Robinson, writer ofDora and the Lost CityandLove and Monsters, was hired to pen the script in May 2021.Rogue Squadrontook its name from a popular line ofStar Warsvideo games and books. While the film is set to be an original story, it will draw inspirationfrom the previousRogue Squadronmedia.

Every ‘Star Wars’ Show That Isn’t (Strictly) About the Jedi, Ranked

There are a handful of shows out there that aren’t strictly about the Jedi, even if they do include some Force-wielding warriors.

Originally set to begin production in late 2021, it was delayed due to Jenkins' busy schedule. By September 2022, the film had beenremoved from the Disney release schedule, and it appeared that Jenkins was moving forward withWonder Woman 3.Wonder Woman 3was canceled three months later by the new DC Studios presidents, James Gunn and Peter Safran. Many have speculated that the combination ofTop Gun: Maverick’s box office success, making Lucasfilm nervous about living up to the film’s hype, and the poor reaction toWonder Woman 1984played a part in Rogue Squadron’s delay. Yet,Rogue Squadronis still in development. In March 2024,Patty Jenkins resigned her contract with Lucasfilmto work onRogue Squadron.

Diego Luna in Andor Season 2

Nobody knows precisely what is happening withRogue Squadron. There are multipleStar Warsfilms in various stages of development at Lucasfilm. The franchise will return to the big screen withThe Mandalorian & Grogu, set for release in May 2026, followed byStarfighterstarring Ryan Gosling in May 2027. The Daisy Ridley-led Rey film and the James MangoldDawn of the Jedimovie are still in development, butRogue Squadronshould be theStar Warsfilm Disney prioritizes for a 2028 release date… and David Corenswet should be the lead.

David Corenswet’s Dream Come True and What ‘Star Wars’ Needs

It is unclear what type of story Patty Jenkins has planned forRogue Squadron, or what the roles will even be. Yet there is likely to be an ensemble, and one of those roles has to be right for David Corenswet. He doesn’t have to be the lead (thoughSupermanshows he has leading man material), but putting him inRogue Squadronnot only gives Corenswet the chance to live out a dream but also gives Disney and Lucasfilm a rising star to headline a newStar Warsproject that, theoretically, could lead to more appearances in future films and television series.

One might say Corenswet would be too busy to do bothStar WarsandSuperman, yet other actors have managed multiple franchises. Harrison Ford is equallyfamous for bothStar WarsandIndiana Jones. Chris Pratt starred inJurassic WorldandGuardians of the Galaxy, while Pratt’s MCU co-star Zoe Saldaña appeared inAvatar,Star Trek, andGuardians of the Galaxy.Corenswet could easily trade off between the blue suit and red cape for an orange fighter jumpsuit.

David Corenswet as Superman DCU

We Have Eight Superman Movies and DC Still Can’t Get One of His Biggest Villains on Screen

From Tim Burton to Zack Snyder, many directors have tried and failed to bring Superman’s foe, Brainiac, to the big screen.

WhileStar Warshas never been a franchise that has needed big-name stars to draw in audiences, since the brand itself is the attraction, it also wouldn’t hurt to get an actor who is now the star of what is looking to be one of the biggest movies of the year to star in the next entry in a galaxy far, far away. The Superman cursehas often been a topic of discussion among actors, as the role is so iconic that it becomes almost impossible to escape. However, that could be something Corenswet and Disney play to their advantage. Audiences will immediately recognize Superman in the trailer for a newStar Warsmovie, generating engagement and interest for a film that likely won’t feature lightsabers or Jedi.

David Corenswet suited up as Superman in DCU Reboot

Corenswet was already able to manifest himself playing Superman, as he hinted at wanting to play the character as far back as 2019, so the same could happen withStar Wars. The very fact that Lucasfilm is developing a movie based on the X-Wing pilots feels like too good an opportunity for the studio to pass up. It also happens to be David Corenswet’s dream role in his favorite franchise. If Lucasfilm, Disney, and Patty Jenkins are serious aboutbringing theRogue Squadronfilm to life, casting David Corenswet is the move that could win over a skeptical fan base.
