SupermanstarNicholas Houltdoesn’t rule out returning to the Marvel Universe, though he didn’t expect to return forAvengers: Secret Warsanyway. Before joining the DCU, Hoult played the Marvel superhero Hank McCoy / Beast, starring inX-Men: First Classand continuing withX-Men: Days of Future Past,X-Men: Apocalypse, and finally inX-Men: Dark Phoenix. WithAvengers: Doomsdaybringing back many of the 20th Century Fox era X-Men characters, rumors circulated that it or the following film might include even more pastX-Mencameos.

During theVanity Fairlie detector interview withSupermanco-star David Corenswet (viaThe Direct), Hoult was asked if taking on the role of Lex Luthor might have decreased his chances of reprising his role as Beast inAvengers: Secret Wars. Hoult responded with “No. I don’t think I had a high chance anyway.” Hoult was then asked about his predecessor, Kelsey Grammer, who played Beast inX-Men: The Last Standand reprised his role inThe Marvelsand is set to return inAvengers: Doomsday.

David Corenswet: “Is it because you simply cannot compete with this man?” (points to a photo of Kelsey Grammer as Beast in X-Men: The Last Stand)

Nicholas Hoult: “Yeah. Yes. He’s a good Beast. Kelsey Grammer. The first.”

All 7 X-Men Characters Confirmed for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ So Far

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will feature plenty of X-Men characters played by actors from the original film series.

Why is Nicholas Hoult Not Returning As Beast?

Hoult’s involvement with the DCU doesn’t prevent him from returning to the Marvel Universe in either the MCU or another Marvel project, as many actors have overlapped between the two franchises. Hoult was part of the rebootedX-Mencast introduced inX-Men: First Classalongside James McAvoy’s Professor X, Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, and Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique. Despite those stars being incredibly famous and critically acclaimed, their mainX-Menfilms never matched the box office heights of the originalX-Mentrilogy, and the most successful film,X-Men: Days of Future Past, which united the two casts.

Avengers: Doomsdayhasopted to focus primarily on the X-Men actors from the original trilogy. The exception is Channing Tatum as Gambit, who was initially supposed to be connected to the post-Days of Future Pastrebooted timeline, but didn’t make his cinematic debut untilDeadpool & Wolverine. Even though Grammer’s Beast was part ofX-Men: The Last Stand, a widely disliked film, his performances have consistently received praise, and now his revamped, CGI-enhanced version of the character seen inThe Marvels' post-credits scene is just one character fans can’t wait to see more of.

Avengers: Secret Wars, though, remains shrouded in mystery. If the film follows the 2015 comic, the story could take place in an alternate reality where various versions of characters coexist simultaneously, potentially setting the stage for Hoult to appear alongside Grammer as two different versions of Beast. Even if Hoult does not get to reprise his role, the actor will likely be very busy playing Lex Luthor for the foreseeable future, asSuperman’s critical reception andearly box officesuggest a cinematic franchise that will remain strong for years.
