There’s no denying the absolute juggernaut that isThe Bear. The Hulu-exclusive FX seriesbroke ratings recordswith its third season, bringing in over five million views in four days. This number shattered the record for a scripted series premiere on the platform. However, ratings are not the only recordThe Bearhas smashed. After heading into this year’s Emmys with an impressive 23 nominations, the seriestopped its own Emmys recordfor wins during last night’s broadcast.
The Bear, led by Jeremy Allen White, walked away from the Emmys with an astounding 11 wins, edging out the record it set in the comedy category last year. However, after beating several acclaimed comedies during the ceremony, the series' placement in the comedy category had fans raising their eyebrows. Several fans took to social media during and after the Emmys, expressing confusion aboutThe Bear’scategorization. One viewerwroteon X, “The bear is not a comedy. Why the Emmys continue to let it enter is a shame bc I believe it would still win in drama.” Another fan watching the awards showechoed the same sentiment:

“Jeremy Allen White is an amazing actor in a great show… who hasn’t delivered one funny line in three seasons. The #Emmys are broken. Martin Short, Steve Martin & Larry David are three of the funniest humans ever. Comedy needs to be factored into Best Actor in a COMEDY Series.”
Set in a Chicago sandwich shop, The Bear follows Carmy Berzatto, a young professionally trained chef who returns to take over his family business after the unexpected death of his brother. At odds with many of the shop’s employees due to his culinary training, Carmy struggles to maintain order and keep the shop from failing entirely. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy alongside Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri.

Fans Praise Jeremy Allen White, but Question The Bear’s Comedy Chops
While there is some confusion about what genreThe Bearbelongs in, one thing that fans of the show seemingly agree on is that Jeremy Allen White is deserving of accolades. Another fantweeted, “Like I love him and he so deserves the recognition but damnn his category doesn’t make any sense, steve and martin are long overdue,” referring toOnly Murders in the Buildingstars Steve Martin and Martin Short. Some fans also pointed out the irony of White winning forThe Bearafter his previous series,Shameless, experienced the opposite, with it being placed in the drama category despite oftentimes coming across as more of a comedy.
The Bear Wins All Day at the Creative Arts Emmys
The Bear’s best guest stars took home awards at this year’s Creative Arts Emmys.
It wasn’t just the fans questioning whetherThe Bearwas a comedy or a drama at last night’s Emmy Awards. Variety was on the red carpet asking actors the same question. While the actors didn’t seem to think the genre of the series was something that mattered, fans watching the clips had a drastically different opinion. In a reply to that clip on X, one viewerstated, “I love #TheBear but I’m boycotting until they move it from the comedy category. I think they’d win in Drama but they are screwing some brilliant comedic actors out of a chance for an award.”

The first three seasons ofThe Bearare streaming now on Hulu.
