It has beenofficially announcedthat theRoseannespinoff series has been renewed for its fifth season on the network, guaranteeing Dan and family will be on the air through the 2022-23 season. ABC also renewed fellow comediesHome EconomicsandThe Wonder Yearswhile dramasBig SkyandA Million Little Thingswere also given renewal orders.

Ratings forThe Connersare far from they were in the first season, though the show remains the second-highest Wednesday comedy just behindThe Goldbergs, which was also renewed. The series was spawned as a hail mary after the sudden removal of Roseanne Barr from the Roseanne revival due to controversial comments she had posted on social media. There were concerns that fans would not accept a spinoff for a series that kills off its main character, butThe Connershave thrived moving forward.

The Conners Getting Renewed Was Expected

News of a renewal had been a bit slow to come, and this may be because of the contracts with the talent. With the way the series had spawned off from a different show, the cast had been locked into yearly deals as opposed to the standard six-year contract. However, there were reports in April that John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, and other key cast members had finalized deals to return in a potential fifth season, making the renewal all but guaranteed at that point.

“Well, you know it’s interesting,“Michael Fishman previously told MovieWebof reprising hisRoseannerole. “I think the general thing when you come back to a character after such a long period, which is what people are experiencing now as we do these remakes, there’s this nostalgic kind of stepping through the time warp feeling that is very surreal, especially when you get a very similar set or the exact set as in our case. And you walk into it and this place you left twenty years ago is brought back to life and your stepping in it and everything is right back and you’re in these same relationships again. I think that’s such a unique experience.”

He added, “But mine, I think, is a little different from almost everybody else. And the reason I say that is, particularly on our show, I was a kid when we left. I was fifteen. And so, my life is so radically different, and my character’s life is so radically different, that it’s really about studying where he was and who he was, and then trying to decide who he would be now and what you would want him to be… We got to meet him as an adult.”

The season 4 finale ofThe Connerswill air on June 25, 2025, on ABC. Season 5 doesn’t yet have a premiere date.
