Great news,The Craftfans. The remake announced last year is actually a sequel. Which means we may get to see some of the original cast reprising their characters. Original producerDouglas Wick, who is helping bring this new witchy tale to the big screen confirmed that the upcoming thriller willcontinue the story, not reboot it. But as far as an actual storyline, we’re still a little in the dark.
Sony got mixed reactions last May when it originally announced thatThe Craft remakewas happening. No recent horror reboot has fared well against critics or fans, and the idea of bringing back this 1996 cult classic certainly had some groaning in disgust. Though, we’ve yet to see how the idea of a true sequel will go over amongstThe Craftcoven.
The Craftwas a modest success at the box office when it was released exactly 20 years ago today, pulling in a respectable $24.8 million. The story followed four teenage girls, Bonnie (Neve Campbell), Nancy (Fairuza Balk), Rochelle (Rachel True), and Sarah (Robin Tunney), who form their own coven while attending the Angeles Catholic prep high school. They decide to use their powerful witch powers against fellow classmates who’d done them wrong. Though the follow-up currently doesn’t have any cast attached, the story will pick up exactly twenty years later and is set in modern times. ExplainsDouglas WicktoHitFix.
“There will be callbacks to the original movie, so you will see there is a connection between what happened in the days of The Craft, and how these young women come across this magic many years later.”
Leigh Janiakhas joined original co-writerPhil Graziadeito work on the script forThe Craft 2.Janiak, who made her feature film directorial debut with 2014’sHoneymoonis also set to direct. Though, the project has not made much noise in the year since it was first announced. The producer goes onto say this about the quasi-reboot.
“Here are some young women who once again discover thepower of magic, and we explore their emotional lives, their wants, their fears, their longings, as they become empowered. So you know, the same way you use a war movie to explore the psyche of men, you get to create a heightened world to explore the psyche of these women. And so that seemed like an opportunity that was ripe and a way to make a movie that would be very much about now. And of course, part of that was just finding a talent that felt like enough of a real talent that you’d really be interested in her interpretation of this kind of story now, and of course Leigh is exactly that.”
From that passage, we can gather that the main story will not revolve around the originalcoven of witches, but will instead introduce four new main characters. That doesn’t mean the original witches won’t make an appearance. Though how they will be incorporated into the story is anyone’s guess. At this time, Sony Pictures has not givenThe Craft 2a proper release date or title. We’ll keep you posted as the story continues to break.
