ProducerNeal H. Moritzhas been wanting to make the dreams come true of fans who happen to love the mega-hit boy band,NSYNC. As it turns out, the man behindThe Fast and the Furiousand other big IP has been trying to get a biopic made about the group for years. The film wouldchart their success following the legal battle with former manager and Ponzi scheme aficionado, Lou Pearlman. However, even though he has engaged with all five members of the group, it has hit various snags.

PerThe Hollywood Reporter, Mortiz has been shopping the project around to studios that would serve as a biopic for NSYNC. And the producer has met with all five members of the group, which includesJustin Timberlake, Joey Fatone, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, and Chris Kirkpatrick, to have each of them participate. According to reports, the project made it to the screenwriting phase and the group was interested, given thesuccess of recent biopics such asBohemian RhapsodyandA Complete Unknown, but the project hit a snag because of a lot of moving parts.

There was talk of attaching Timberlake as an executive producer, but the film would need to have all five members sign off on it becausethey all share ownership in the NSYNC name, and are each represented by a different management firm. In addition to this, which could still please NSYNC fans, the group has been having"internal discussions" about where to take the band next in terms of future projects.

One avenue is a documentary, which could prove to be a lucrative endeavor should it be snatched up by a streaming service. There was also an issue of timing with doing a biopic because the powers that be believeda coinciding tour would align well with a film. But, as of now, there are no talks of embarking on a group tour asTimberlake is still doing a solo one of his own.

All Members of NSYNC Need to be Involved With the Biopic

An NSYNC biopic would need to be done with the cooperation of all five members because going down the fictional route would not be something that would appeal to the group’s fans.Anyone making a film would need access to the group’s music, which has continued to endure, and they can’t do that without the participation of the group.

NSYNC saw a resurgence last summer when their songBye, Bye, Byewasfeatured inDeadpool & Wolverineand saw the catchy tune increase in downloads and video views on YouTube, along with viral videos and social posts of the dancing scene. There is clearly an appetite for SOMETHING from NSYNC, and it should be noted that a film wasn’t thrown out the window completely. According to the report,“If this project was tabled for further discussions, it still leaves a door open.”

NSYNC rose to fame during the mid- to late-’90s boom of boy band groups. They were formed in 1995 by their manager Pearlman, who put them together secretly behind the backs of The Backstreet Boys, who he was already having major success with, as he groomed NSYNC for a similar run. Their self-titled album was first released to success in Europe before going on to eventually catch on in the U.S., where it would sell9.8 million copies domestically and a jaw-dropping 15.5 million copies worldwide.

Despite their success, the band found themselves in aheated legal battle with Pearlman following the release of their first album and the lead-up to their second,No Strings Attached, in 2000. The group alleged in legal filings that Pearlman mismanaged the money made by the group and did not represent his role properly in their contracts, which allowed him to take an unfair share of their profits. Essentially, Pearlman obtained funds as their manager and as a"sixth member"of the group, a move he also pulled on The Backstreet Boys, who also sued Pearlman. The matter was ultimately settled out of court and NSYNC went on to sign a new recording contract.

The result of that recording contract wasNo Strings Attached, whichbroke records when it sold 2.4 million copies in its first week alone. It went on to become the best-selling album of 2000 with sales of 11.16 million copies, and they would release another album in 2001,Celebrity, which also sold well in its first week with 1.8 million copies sold. AfterCelebritycounted 5 million albums sold, the group disbanded as Timberlake embarked on a solo career. He found great success as a solo artist and film star, while the group has gotten back together for special performances and one-off singles.

The NSYNC fan base will be waiting for whatever the group decides to do next.
