The last film in the franchise,The Forever Purge, was released in 2021, and presented an unhinged version of the dystopian future.Back in 2023, DeMonaco shared some details about a possible sequel, but now it seems likeThe Purge 6is finally becoming a reality:

“I think I can say, without getting in trouble, I just finished a script, and handed it to Sébastien [Lemercier]. He’s read multiple drafts, given me notes. We just handed it to Jason [Blum]. I came up with an idea that the studio liked.

“I’m really happy with it. I hope they like it. I think it’s cool and fun. We’re hoping next year would be great to shoot, maybe the end of this year if timing works out. But now it’s with the powers that be, so we’ll see what happens.”

Place Your Bets: A Fan-Favorite Character Will Return in the Upcoming ‘Purge’ Sequel

DeMonaco did not reveal whether the upcoming sequel is based on a legacy character, or whether it’s a full reboot of the entirePurgeuniverse. What he did talk about was being inspired by his experience co-writing the film with his wife. He has said in the past thathis original inspirationcame from a road rage incident where a drunk driver almost killed them. The director also teased the idea that the film would feature “great female” characters, which brings the question: Could Ana de la Reguera’s Adela, fromThe Forever Purge, return as the so-called “people’s favorite character”?

“People’s favorite character might be coming back, I can say without naming who that is; a couple of people who could be. But someone’s coming back who I love, and I think the audience loves.

“Then we create some real great female heroes in this one. There’s some really amazing women. We’ve had some great women in the past, but real warrior women come forth here in a way that we haven’t really explored on Purge night. It’s been really fun to write. And I’m writing with my wife, which is really fun. So I’m getting a nice female perspective, and that’s been really fun.”
