South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut Took Aim at Censorship and Big Movie Musicals

Directed byseries creator Trey Parkerfrom a screenplay co-written with series co-creator Matt Stone and Pam Brady,South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncutis an adult-animated musical comedy that is based on the South Park TV series. In the film, Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny sneak into an R-rated movie starring the popular Canadian duo Terrance and Phillip, after which they begin excessively swearing, having seen the pair doing it in their movie. Soon, moral panic sinks in throughout the United States, and it culminates with the U.S. declaring war on Canada.

To fix things, Stan, Kyle, and Cartman take it upon themselves to save Terrance and Phillip from execution, while Kenny tries to prevent another life-altering prophecy involving Satan and Saddam Hussein’s plan to conquer the world. Parker, Stone, Mary Kay Bergman, and the late Isaac Hayes all reprise their vocal roles from the series, while the likes of George Clooney, Eric Idle, and Mike Judge lend their voices in supporting roles.

The film cleverly pokes fun at themes involving censorship and scapegoating while also serving as a satire and parody of Disney musicalsand other Broadway musicalsto frame its story. The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) is also a big target for comedic comeuppance throughout the film, which is suitably fitting since Parker and Stone fought with the MPAA constantly during production after the film was returned with an NC-17 rating for its frequent use of profanity.
