Nicolas Cage Wasn’t Overly Excited to Play Himself

Nicolas Cage has taken on a wide variety of roles over the years, but the idea of playing himself in a film is different. The actor addressed the film in a previous interview withEntertainment Weekly, and while he’s playing afictionalizedversion of himself, Cage was still not very excited about taking on the “Nick Cage” role inThe Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. That changed when he saw the screenplay, as he appreciated the creative vision.

“[‘Nick Cage’] is an invented version of Nic Cage,” Cage said. “The character is feeling unfulfilled and contending with the rejection that can happen so often in the small town that is Hollywood. It’s not me. I’m feeling pretty good about things. I wasn’t too excited about the idea of playing myself, but when Tom sent me this script, Nicky reminded me a little of Jerry Lewis' Buddy Love inThe Nutty Professor. I always admired what he did with that movie. For me, Nicky steals the show.”

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talentwas named asone of the headliners at this year’s SXSW film festivalin Austin, Texas. The film festivals and conferences are going down from March 11-20, 2022. This will give those in attendance an opportunity to see what could be Cage’s most wild role yet ahead of its wider release. Also included with the headliners is the Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock vehicleThe Lost Cityfrom filmmakers Adam and Aaron Nee.

For its wide release,The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talentis scheduled to drop on August 18, 2025.
