With his role as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in not only director Jon Watts’Spider-Man: HomecomingandSpider-Man: Far From Homebut The Russo Brothers’Avengers: Infinity WarandAvengers: Endgame,Tom Hollandis quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men.
And today we have word that theCaptain America: Civil WarandIn the Heart of the Seaactor is being eyed for the lead role in Disney’s planned upcoming live-action remake of their semi-hit animated filmAtlantis: The Lost Empire.
Evidently,Disneyintends to “stick fairly close to the animated film,” and it seems that Holland is being eyed to play the role of geeky Smithsonian cartographer Milo Thatch, initially voiced by Michael J. Fox in the 2001 animated version.
While it might seem like a live-action remake ofAtlantis: The Lost Empireis a strange plan for Disney, it could actually be one of their best ideas yet. I mean take a minute and think about it, why bother to remake only classic movies such asThe Lion King,Aladdin, andBeauty and the Beast? Why wouldn’t Disney bother to take a stab at rebooting some of their lesser-known (and lesser-quality) animated adventures such asAtlantis: The Lost Empire,Lilo & Stitch, andTreasure Planet, to name a few? After all, I can’t be the only dude out there that thinks these three films alone would have worked better in the live-action format, to begin with. Okay, maybe notLilo & Stichso much, but still, I wouldn’t turn down a live-action remake of that adorable tale.
Again, I don’t know about you, but I think Disney could really be on to something here. I guess we’ll see one of these days. Meanwhile, for those who might not know, the original animated movie centered on a naive-but-determined museum cartographer by the name of Milo Thatch (voiced by the above-mentioned Michael J. Fox) who becomes the key to unraveling an ancient mystery when he joins up with a group of daredevil explorers to find the legendary lost empire of Atlantis.
On top of Michael J. Fox, the original animated adventure featured the voice-work of Corey Burton as Moliere, Claudia Christian as Helga, James Garner as Rourke, John Mahoney as Preston Whitmore, Phil Morris as Dr. Sweet, and Leonard Nimoy as the Atlantean King. Don Novello joined them as Vinny, along with Jacqueline Obradors as Audrey, Florence Stanley as Mrs. Packard, David Ogden Stiers as Mr. Harcourt,Cree Summer as Princess Kida, and Jim Varney as Cookie.
Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise directed the movie which was produced by Don Hahn from a screenplay written by Tab Murphy based on a story by Wise, Trousdale, and Murphy along with Bryce Zabel, Jackie Zabel, and Joss Whedon. James Newton Howard provided the movie with its epic score, and Ellen Keneshea edited it all together. Buena Vista Pictures unleashed the animated adventure into a theater near your younger brother back on June 24, 2025. The next Disney animation tolive-action remakeDisney has in the pipeline isIron ManandThe Jungle Bookdirector Jon Favreau’sThe Lion King. That movie is all set to destroy the box-office on June 21, 2025. Meanwhile, this casting update comes to us fromWe Got This Covered.
