After almost two years on the platform,Tom Cruiseis flying high again on the Paramount+ movie chart, withTop Gun: Maverickreturning to steal the number one spot this week. Even more surprising, is that it stole the peak position from one of Cruise’s divisive action sequels,Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. In fact, Cruise is currently experiencing a huge surge of viewers on Paramount+, as his original outing as Lee Child’s Reacher is also among the top movies currently streaming on the platform.
The resurgence in Cruise’s take on Jack Reacher could be explained away by theupcoming third season of Prime Video’sReacher, in which Alan Ritchson cuts a much more accurate version of the hulking mercenary. The previous seasons of the series are charting high on Prime Video right now, and it seems that Cruise’s two movies are also benefiting from the popularity of the newest iteration.

However, the surprise return ofTop Gun: Maverickto being top gun of the chart is more of a mystery. The highly rated blockbuster sequel certainly doesn’t need an excuse to be gaining attention again, but after more than 670 days on the platform, it would be more expectant to see the movie dropping into the general content on the site and new titles overwhelming it when it comes to the list of most watched movies. Currently, Cruise’s three movies are outpacing the likes ofTransformers One, and some timely returns for Ridley Scott’sGladiatorandSonictheHedgehog 2, both of which have been spurred on by cinematic sequels in the last month.

Tom Cruise is still a box office draw with any of his new movies, especially when it comes to his action roles, such asplaying Ethan Hunt in theMission: Impossiblefranchise. He will be throwing himself into more death-defying stunts this summer inMission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and with that movie on the horizon, it could also factor into the current love being shown for the actor on Paramount+.
Top Gun: Maverickwas a movie that seemed destined to fail when it was finally released in cinemas in the summer of 2022. After facing several delays during the Covid pandemic, the constant release date push-backs suggested that there could be trouble ahead for the belated legacy sequel. However, when it arrived in cinemas, the nostalgic return took off and became the highest grossing movie of the year. Its return to the top of the chart makes it clear that even now, there is something special about this particular film that Cruise fans just cannot get enough of.
