Train to Busan 2, which has officially been titledPeninsula, is officially filming. Not only that, but the cast has been confirmed for the highly-anticipated sequel, in addition to the reveal of the first piece of teaser art. This is, perhaps, the most exciting bit of zombie-related news to come around in a very long time, as anyone who has seen the original movie can attest to. Much in the way that it was exciting to hear that28 Weeks Laterwas happening as a follow-up to28 Days Laterseveral years back.
According to a new report, filming on the movie kicked off in June. The cast forPeninsulaincludes Kang Dong Won, who will take on the lead role of Jung Suk. Joining him will be actress Lee Jung Hyun in the role of Min Jung, who is described as “a strong-willed survivor,” who has bothhope for the futureand leadership skills. Rounding out the ensemble is child actress Lee Raeas Joon Yi, veteran actor Kwon Hae Hyo as Kim Noh In, the oldest surviving member of the crew, with Kim Min Jae and Goo Kyo Hwan.
As for the art, it’s not terribly revealing, but it does give us a sense of what’s coming our way. WhileTrain to Busanwas largely a contained zombie nightmare, the sequel will clearly be expanding things a bit. We see a group of survivors, presumably some of these new actors, wandering around at night in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It’s both haunting and gorgeous. If director Yeon Sang-ho, who returns to helm the follow-up, can capture something as spooky and beautiful on film, we could have something special on our hands.
The South Korean title for the movie is “Bando,” which translates to peninsula. The sequel is said to take place 4 years after the events of the first movie, with the action focused on the Korean peninsula. Hence, the name. The entire area has become an uninhabitable wasteland following thedevastating zombie takeover. However, pockets of uninfected humans are still trapped there, waiting without certainty, yet clinging to hope for rescue that may never come.
Released in 2016, Train To Busan wound up becoming a major hit, grossing $87 million worldwide, working from a comparatively minimal $8.5 million budget. Critics and moviegoers alike also absolutely adored the movie, as it currently holds a stellar 95 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to the sequel, as we reported in September 2018, it was revealed that horror masterJames Wan is set to produce an American remakeof the hit.
A release date has yet to be set forTrain To Busan 2, but with filming underway now, it’s not unreasonable to expect to see it in theaters next year.
