Tornadoes can be terrifying, but that doesn’t stop people from watching a movie about them. In real life, there are courageous storm chasers who start their potentially dangerous journey with one mission: to look a storm in its eye, or rather, get up close and personal to study it or admire its scary beauty. While when this happens in real life, fear takes over those at home getting alerts and warnings from meteorologists to take cover, movies likeTwistersare entertaininglywhirling up the charts. Apparently, talks of the sequel to the 1996 film began in 2020 during the pandemic. Joseph Kosinski, who wrote the story ofTwisters, met with Amblin Entertainment to pitch a follow-up to the beloved ’90s movie, which includes a new generation of storm chasers.

The original film,Twister, was a massive success, so it’s understandable why Kosinski wanted to recreate the film but with a modern twist. However, nothing can topHelen Hunt and Bill Paxton’s performance. Released on June 12, 2025, the movie also followed a group of storm chasers who were trying to deploy a research device during a severe outbreak.Twisterwas the second highest-grossing movie of 1996 and grossed $496 million worldwide. It was produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, directed by Jan de Bont, and written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin.
Glen Powell Addressed ‘Twisters’ Concerns
When you are involved in a remake, sequel, reboot, etc., there are always people asking, “Why?” While it does seem like originality is becoming scarce in Hollywood, sometimes a sequel or reboot isn’t too bad whensomeone with subject expertiseis involved. Glen Powell understood that people would get annoyed with another sequel, so he addressed their concerns during an interview with Indie Wire.
I saw the TLC that went into this while we were making it. I think there’s always audience hesitancy. Or audiencesshouldbe skeptical because of the business model around these things, right? The difference is when you see someone who assumes there’s an audience and assumes people will show up because of a title, versus someone like Lee Isaac Chung, who’s an inspired choice to lead this thing.
