After nearly seven years in development, Sony’sUnchartedmovie adaptation is moving forward once again. The studio has brought on writer-directorJoe Carnahanto write the script for thisvideo gameadaptation, but unfortunately he won’t be directing at this time. The filmmaker stated that he would love to direct this project “in a perfect world,” but right now, he’s only set to write the script.

The last we heard about this project was in June 2015, whenSeth Gordondropped out as the director.Varietyreports thatJoe Carnahan’s involvement with Sony’sBad Boys 3, which starts filming early next year afterWill Smithwraps onBright, makes the filmmaker unavailable to direct. Here’s whatJoe Carnahantold the site about this project.

“In a perfect world I would love to do both, but right now, I’m only on board to write the script. Archaeology today is in itself an antiquity, but that world has always fascinated me. Especially when you go to a museum today and wonder how a piece got there to begin with. Plus, the property itself is so popular that it was hard to turn down an opportunity to work on it.”

The video game series centers onNathan Drake, a descendant of Sir Francis Drake, who goes on a quest to find the lost city of El Dorado. Along the way, he runs into a rival treasure hunter, who must team up to fend off creatures, mutated Spaniards and Nazis. Over the years,David O. Russellwas set to direct, withMark Wahlbergbeing eyed to star, but they both eventually left the project.

Neil Burger(Divergent) was attached at one point beforeSeth Gordon(Horrible Bosses) signed on back in 2014, withMark Boal(Zero Dark Thirty,The Hurt Locker) coming aboard to write the script later that year.Chris Prattalso passed on the Nathan Drake role, with other writers such asThomas Dean Donnelly,Joshua Oppenheimer,Cormac Wibberley&Marianne WibberleyandDavid Guggenheimtackling the project at various points in time.Joe Carnahanmost recently directedStretch, along with a number of episodes ofThe BlacklistandState of Affairs. He is also producingThe Wheelmanfor Netflix, which hasFrank Grilloattached to star.
