Wednesday’sdominance at Netflix has risen another notch after the release of data from the show’s second week of release. Having already brokenStranger Things 4’srecord for the number of hours viewed in a week during its first few days out, the Addams Family series has now doubled down on that by breaking its own record as it aims to surpassStranger Thingsto be the most-watched English language show in Netflix history.

The Tim Burton-directed series sees Jenna Ortega take on the role of Wednesday Addams, the daughter of Morticia and Gomez, who finds herself enrolled in Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts. Over the show, Wednesday is forced to confront secrets from her family’s past, monsters from her present, and look to the future of where she goes next.

After logging 341.2 million hours streamed in one week on its debut,Wednesday’sviewing volumes between November 28 – December 4 shattered that record with 411.29 million hours viewed worldwide, according toThe Hollywood Reporter. Not only has this broken the recordset a week ago by the series, but it also madeWednesdaythe only English-language series to have ever logged more than 400 million hours in a single week. While this is still nowhere nearSquid Game’s571.76 million hours record, it is a hugely impressive feat for a series that came with many reservations and more than its fair share of middling reviews.

What Has MadeWednesdaySuch An Unstoppable Force?

Wednesdayarrived on Netflix as a seemingly perfect combination ofan iconic director, Tim Burton, making his first foray into the world of television, an equally iconic lead character, and plenty of social media-ready moments that have continued to push the series in front of millions of potential fans.

For many people, the combination of Tim Burton’s gothic sensibilities and the Addams Family’s dark fantasy is one that has been a long time coming. However, even though the series is following in the footsteps of two much-loved movies of the early 1990s, Jenna Ortega has effortlessly overcome the obvious comparisons with Christina Ricci’s version of Wednesday to make the role her own. One scene in which Wednesday performs a uniquedance routine to The Cramps’ “Goo Goo Muck” has also helped elevate the series after becoming a viral sensation on TikTok.

All of this seems to be pushing Netflix to renew the series for at least another season and could even manage to give the showrunners their wish of delivering some other spin-offs. However, there has been no green-light as yet, and that is something that shouldn’t surprise fans of Neil Gaiman’sThe Sandman, as that series took quite a while to get its renewal as well. With the streamer being mostly interested in how many viewers watch the entire series, there will be a few more weeks of figures to come before any kind of confirmed second season becomes a reality.
