This is almost too funny to believe. Too weird. Too impossible. It’s just too crazy for it to have worked out. But when theFuller Houseteam realized they were going to have to move forward on theFull Houserevival series withoutMary-Kate OlsenandAshley Olsen, they concocted a plan. One that failed.
It was unlikely thatAshley OlsenandMary-Kate Olsenwould return for Fuller House, since they have become an Empire unto themselves since the show went off the air. But that didn’t stop producers from trying to convince them to at least do a cameo. When all hope was lost, the team decided to make an offer to someone very close to the twins. Their own sister. Yes, despite her rise as in actress in such blockbusters asGodzillaandAvengers: Age of Ultron, the Fuller House team went afterElizabeth Olsento playMichelle Tanner.
John Stamosconfirmed this back-up plan while discussing the revival on SiriusXM, speaking with Andy Cohen. They knew it was a longshot. The actor, who is confirmed to reprise hisiconic sitcomrole as Uncle Jesse, had this to say about the Hail Mary pass.
“We actually went to - I don’t think this has been talked about. I didn’t do it. I think Jeff Franklin did. I said, ‘Call the sister. Ask her…We talked to her agent and her agent was like, ‘Come on. She’s not going to do that.’ But we did call her agent.”
It’s likely that the offer never made it directly to Elizabeth Olsen. And this could be the first time she’s even hearing about it. That doesn’t mean she’d be at all open to such a move. AndJohn Stamosdoesn’t sound like he has much faith in the actress’ agent, suspecting that he never passed the offer onto his client. The role would have interfered with her return role as Scarlet Witch inCaptain America: Civil War, as it was shooting at the same time as new Fuller House episodes. And its doubtful she would have wanted to step on her sisters’sitcom legacy.
Michelle hasn’t been recast for Fuller House, with the first season in the can. And co-starLori Loughlin, who plays Aunt Becky, seems pretty confident that they won’t return if the show gets picked up for a second season. There will be a scene where one of the characters is seen talking on the phone to Michelle. But we won’t even get to hear her voice. Fuller House makes itsNetflixdebut on Thursday, February 26.
