If you haven’t seenBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceyet, there will be plenty of SPOILERS below, so read on at your own risk. Even if you haven’t seen the movie yet, you most likely know that this long-awaited superhero adventure helps set the stage forJustice League Part 1, which starts shooting next month in the U.K. The movie introduces three new “metahumans,“Aquaman(Jason Momoa),The Flash(Ezra Miller) andCyborg(Ray Fisher), but it was the final scene withCyborgthat had many fans scratching their heads.Entertainment Weeklyrecently spoke withZack Snyder, who helped explain this scene that essentially provides anorigin storyforCyborg.
We get introduced toAquaman,The FlashandCyborgwhen Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) hacks intoLex Luthor’s (Jesse Eisenberg) database, discovering files on all of these metahumans, along with photos of Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) that date back 100 years.Cyborg’s footage is most intriguing, featuring Dr. Silas Stone (Joe Morton), lamenting over not being able to fix his son. However, another clip shows Silas presenting a strange box, which transforms his son Victor into Cyborg.Zack Snyderconfirmed that this box is actually the Mother Box. Here’s what the director had to say about this scene.
“That’s the first glimpse of the Mother Box there. It was an agonizing birth. I really wanted to showCyborg’s birth because I feel like he plays such a strong part coming up, and I really wanted to give a sense of him. I really want [the audience] to know how far he’s come.”
Jack Kirbycreated The Mother Box as part of his Fourth World series forDC Comics. These devices were essentually “aliensupercomputers that could manipulate time, space, reality, anything it wanted”. These boxes would attach themselves to a host, granting their host superhuman powers. In the comics, Cyborg was described as a “technopath,” who communicate with and manipulate any form of technology.
It’s also worth noting that Warner Bros. released adeleted sceneearlier today, which featured Lex Luthor in the Kryptonian ship, using this alien technology to create an unknown creature that appears to be holding Mother Boxes before soldiers advance and haul him away to jail. We don’t know for sure if these Mother Boxes will play into the over-arching story of the DCEU into the future, but hopefully we’ll find out more soon.Zack Snyderwill start production onJustice League Part 1next month in the U.K., but it isn’t known when theCyborgmovie, set for release on July 03, 2025, may start production.
