It seems like ages ago when thefirst trailerforSuicide Squaddebuted online, just a few days after it was leaked from Comic-Con. Even though production was still under way on the super-villain ensemble, directorDavid Ayerand his massive cast flew into San Diego to present the first footage, which was received with much enthusiasm by the Hall H crowd. Later on tonight, the second trailer will arrive forSuicide Squad, which, according to a trailer description from last month, will feature much more ofJared Leto’s character, The Joker.
The first trailer only gave fans a tiny glimpse ofThe Joker, but it was quite clear that he is much more deranged than the rest of his squad-mates. The studio even released a new poster today that showed The Joker set apart from the rest of the group. Earlier today,USA Todaycaught up with directorDavid Ayer, who said that this character is quite “scary” to take on.
“It’s a scary character to tackle. This iteration of him, people will realize there really is a continuity of history - there is a lot of respect for what the Joker represents, who he is as a character. He is the best known villain in fiction so there’s an incredible responsibility there to also be faithful to what he is but at the same time push him into this next world, next time, next phase.”
There were several reports from the set thatJared Letostayed in character the entire time on the set, even between takes. The director added that some people “kept their distance” from the actor on the set, but every time he showed up, it was like an “event.” Here’s what the director had to say about how he portrayed this iconic character.
“I love helping actors find what methodology works best for them. It’s like tailoring a suit - it’s not one size fits all. But it really made an event when he would show up on set. There was almost a pageantry to him, which did translate into the character and the power on screen he has.”
Jared Leto’s Joker will be the first iteration of the character shown on the big screen since the lateHeath Ledger’s performance in 2008’sThe Dark Knight. While we’ll have to wait and see if fans respond toJared Leto’s version as much as they did withHeath Ledger’s iconic portrayal,Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticedirectorZack Snyderthinks fans will be in for a treat. WhileZack Snyderhimself was never on the set in Toronto, he added that he was “very much looped in on the crazy stuff happening with that.” Here’s what he had to say about the actor’s commitment to the character.
“The commitment to the role, you’re going to see that really shine through in a way that you’re not used to seeing actors in movies really go all the way with (in) every little moment and every little breath. You’re going to get taken on a journey with Jared that I don’t know that everyone’s ready for but I think it will be amazing.”
The all-star ensemble cast also includesWill Smith(Deadshot),Margot Robbie(Harley Quinn),Jai Courtney(Boomerang),Joel Kinnaman(Rick Flagg),Cara Delevingne(Enchantress),Viola Davis(Amanda Waller),Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje(Killer Croc), andJay Hernandez(El Diablo).Scott EastwoodandRay Olubowalealso appear in the movie, but their characters have not been revealed.
