After nearly 7 years, aZombielandsequel is still trying to find its way into existence, and it looks like it may finally be happening. There have been a lot of false starts along the way, but original writersPaul WernickandRhett Reeserecently confirmed that they are currently working on the script and meeting with some of the original cast to getZombieland 2going for real. It sounds like the project may have some actual steam behind it now, and that could be enough to finally get cameras rolling in the near future.
The writing duo appeared together on the latest episode ofKevin SmithandGreg Gunberg’s new AMC showGeeking Out, where they offered an update onZombieland 2. It seems like they have already been discussing things with theoriginal cast members, and they also make it sound like pretty much everyone is still on board. Here is what they had to say.
“That is breaking news that we’re on Zombieland 2 right now. We’re sitting with [Woody Harrelson] tomorrow and are going to sort of walk him through some of the stuff we want to do. All the cast is pretty excited.”
In the past,Jesse Eisenberg,Emma Stone,Abigail BreslinandWoody Harrelsonhave all expressed interest in doing a sequel to the 2009 zombie movie, but it has stalled at seemingly every turn. Now,WernickandReesemay have a bit of leverage to work with, though. The pair also wroteDeadpool, which just so happened to be arguably the biggest hit of 2016. The movie made nearly $800 million on a budget of less than $60 million, soWernickandReesecould be riding the success and trying to leverage that into getting the sequel made sooner rather than later. It doesn’t hurt that they are also in a more hands-on role, as they are executive producing forZombieland 2.
Theoriginal Zombielandgrossed $102.3 million on a budget of less than $30 million, making it a pretty big hit for Sony at the time.ReeseandWernickalso wrote the script for aZombielandTV pilot which was produced as part of Amazon Studios' first ever pilot season. While all four of the main characters were featured in the show, they were all played by different actors, and Amazon didn’t pick up the pilot to series. That is the closest we ever actually got toZombieland 2happening, until now anyway.
There were reports earlier in the year thatZombieland 2was possibly set toshoot this summerin Atlanta, where much of the original movie took place. While that may not be happening, it does seem likeReeseandWernickare trying hard to get this thing going. There was no mention of a director for the project, but it seems possible thatRuben Fleischercould return. Even if cameras started rolling very soon, by the time the movie comes out, it will be nearly a decade since the firstZombielandwas released. Is it too late forZombieland 2? If it is as good as the original, then probably not, but the cast isn’t getting any younger. We will be sure to keep you updated as more details become available.
