Disney has had a dominant first half of the year at thebox office, with the studio distributing three of the top 5 movies both domestically and worldwide.Captain America: Civil Warcurrently leads both here in the states ($338.9 million) and overseas ($1.1 billion). Over the weekend, Disney’sZootopiaalso crossed $1 billion worldwide. However,Zootopiais currently fourth on the domestic charts with $337.2 million, behind the studio’s third big hit this year,The Jungle Book($347.7 million), 20th Century Fox’sDeadpool($362.9 million) andCaptain America: Civil War.
Deadlinereports thatZootopiaearned an addition $4.4 million internationally to cross the $1 billion plateau. There have only been 26 movies in history that have crossed $1 billion, 11 of which have been distributed by Disney.Zootopiais also only the fourth animated movie to cross $1 billion, following Disney Pixar’sToy Story 3($1.06 billion), Universal’sMinions($1.1 billion) and Disney’sFrozen($1.2 billion). WithZootopiaarriving on Blu-ray and DVD this week, it doesn’t seem that it will make much more as its theatrical run comes to a close.
We also reported last month thatZootopiabecame the second highest-grossing original movie of all time, coming in far behind the all-time champAvatar, which grossed $2.7 billion worldwide when it hit theaters in 2009. It also seems unlikely that it will move up any further on the domestic charts, but its domestic and international takes are certainly impressive. The movie has earned $662.8 million internationally, which represents roughly two-thirds of its worldwide take.
